Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act)
North East Link is being assessed by the Australian Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation 1999 Act (EPBC Act).
The EPBC Act is the Australian Government’s central piece of environmental legislation. It provides a legal framework to protect and manage nationally and internationally important flora, fauna, ecological communities and heritage places.
A Public Environment Report (PER) was submitted to the Minister for the Environment on Monday 30 September to inform approval under the EPBC Act. A draft was exhibited for public comment from 16 April – 30 May 2019.
The PER includes information on how the project could affect matters of national environmental significance, such as federally listed threatened species and communities, migratory species and the environment on Commonwealth land during construction and operation and how adverse impacts would be managed. It also includes a summary of submissions received on the draft and how we have addressed them.
A decision by the Minister for the Environment is expected in late 2019.
